Spring ORC- Week 6
Some exciting things are happening (and about to happen around here)!!! If you remember, last week we tackled the headache of getting the electrical moved from where the outlets were on the lower walls to above countertop height. I did opt to leave one outlet low that will function inside a cabinet. This is because I don’t know if this room will be used as a flex space, and if it becomes part homework room, I may want put a printer in one of the cabinets or charge iPads and iPhones tucked away.
This week we focused on repairing all the drywall. There were a lot of places we had to remove drywall to access electrical, so those all had to be patched up. Besides the drywall repair, we were kind of stuck in limbo…I’m still waiting on some materials to come in, and although we have the butcher block countertops, we can’t cut those until the cabinets are installed (which by the way is happening MONDAY!!!). Here’s a peak at the nitty gritty:
Onto the materials rolling in…the butcher block is here! We ordered it from Home Depot and had it shipped to the store because it was faster. The Mr. picked it up this week and I’m so excited! The white oak grain is beautiful. Here’s a peek:
I’m just going to clear coat it, or maybe do a little white oil and let its natural tone come through. And speaking of countertops, I got a marble remnant! It doesn’t have as much veining as I was hoping for, but this is such a tight timeline that I knew I couldn’t be picky. So many fabricators are 4-8 weeks out right now, and I had to go with a remnant from someone that had the time to do the job in a super short timeframe so this was one of two options. I’m just glad I was able to get something.
Another item that arrived is the unlacquered brass clothes rod we will mount between two upper cabinets. It’s so pretty! I will admit, I’m slightly doubting myself now. I really wanted the unlacquered brass rod because I felt it was more unique and I love the finish, however I went back on forth on whether to do the rod brass or polished nickel. Because I chose brass, the only polished nickel finish I will have is the sink faucet (all the hardware is brass, the flush mount is brass, and the lantern is black). I definitely think you can have more than 2 metals in a room, but the doubts always creep in more when I’m designing for myself. The faucet will correlate with the more slate/silver tones of the washer and dryer though so I think it will all look cohesive in the end!
We also got the laundry room sink. I almost pulled the trigger on a brass sink, but in the end decided to go with white. Because there will be a transition of countertop material close to the sink (we will be doing a marble countertop and backsplash just around the sink area and it will be flanked on either side by butcher block) I thought the brass sink, polished nickel faucet, marble surround, and butcher block would make the area too busy. So I found a white enameled sink that had great reviews and will blend in more with the marble.
And last but not least is the Steele canvas laundry bins! So a little hang up with these…I originally ordered the 3 bushel raised bins, however when they arrived they were not raised and did not have wheels! So I looked up my order and for some reason it showed the brown leather trim option as raised with wheels, but when you clicked on the grey trim option for the same item it was not raised and did not have wheels. After noticing there was another 3 bushel raised bin on the website and calling Rejuvenation, we realized there was an error with the image they put on the product I ordered. In other words, I got the correct bin that was supposed to sit on the floor, but it was represented wrong in just the brown leather option image. They were great and offered to swap them out for the raised bins, but the issue was the measurements. I ordered the bins based off the measurements on the website showing the raised bin (which was actually not raised), so if I switched it to the actual 3 bushel raised bin, it would have been too tall to fit under the countertop and support apron (the area these will roll under has a dropped countertop because of the window). So I phoned Steele and they told me if I wanted a 3 bushel with wheels that is NOT raised it’s called a 3 bushel truck. AAANNNDDD of course, no one stocks the 3 bushel trucks, they were weeks out! So I had to compromise…instead of doing three 3 bushel raised bins on wheels, I did four 2-1/2 bushel trucks since Rejuvenation did stock those. They just came and I’m in love! So sturdy and I hope they last forever. The image below doesn’t have the wheels screwed on yet, but the leather detail is beautiful.
As for the coming week here is the tentative schedule:
Monday- cabinet install, marble template
Tuesday/Wednesday- butcher block install on window wall and W/D wall
Thursday/Friday- baseboard install
Saturday- sew cafe curtain
I will try to story the cabinet install, but check back here next week for a peek at some beautiful cabinets! I had the chance to see them in the shop this week all sprayed and the color was divine. And don’t forget to check here for all the other participants’ updates!
